A rare disease wiped out the nutmeg orchards along Orchard Road, but there was still much interest in horticulture among the wealthier residents in Singapore. Together, they formed the Agri-Horticultural Society in 1859. Prominent merchant Hoo Ah Kay (also known as Whampoa) helped secure a former gambier orchard at Tanglin for the now present day Botanic Gardens. It was styled as a tropical version of an English Garden with rolling hills, curving paths, flower beds and rich patches
of natural vegetation. Relive the genesis of Botanic Gardens in this drop sleeve cheongsam, also available in a baby girl version.
